Sa Bom Nim’s Trip to Malaysia The United States delegation, which included SBN Damon Kenyon, SBN Cash Cooper, Mr. Timothy Tia, Mr. Michael Wiener, Warren Osborne and myself met in LA Wednesday night. We boarded the plane for an 18-hour ride, crossing the International Date Line to arrive in Sibu, Malaysia. The courier of the Tanamas hotel graciously met us. On arriving at the hotel, we were pleasantly surprised by the greeting we received. All the clinic participants were lined up in two lines for us to walk through to the hotel desk. We were greeted with a group bow and a great big Soo Bahk led by SBN Kenyon. After shaking hands, renewing our old acquaintances and beginning new ones, we checked in with our roommates and went to our rooms.
Later that evening, all the head instructors of the countries represented (US, Korea, Australia, Philippines, Tialand, United Kingdom and Malaysia) met to go over the upcoming week’s agenda of activities. With some socializing afterwards we retired to our rooms for the evening. Saturday the anticipation of SBN Hwang’s arrival gave enthusiasm and electricity to the morning. SBN Kenyon led the morning clinic while SBN Cooper and myself accompanied the Malaysians to the airport to welcome SBN Hwang. On his arrival, SBN Hwang was presented with traditional Lei of flowers. Immediately after arriving back at the hotel we all dressed into Do Boks for a photo opportunity for the local media. While SBN Hwang was being interviewed we all practiced for the evenings international demonstration and banquette. The demonstration had many impressive participants with Hyungs (forms), skits, practical applications, Moo Pal Dan Khoom and much more. Represented countries gave demonstrations by belt levels of 6th Gup green belts all the way to 6th dan master instructors. After the demonstrations we all sat down to a semi formal banquette. During the banquette the representatives of the Australia Soo Bahk Do Federation presented SBNS Hwang, Kenyon, Yap, Brown and Hedges with authentic Australian Abboridgenary musical instruments called didgereydoos. Sunday morning began with Moo Pal Dan Kuhm. After breakfast we began clinics with SBN Hwang introducing Moo Sang and You Sang Gi Cho Ki Sool. Lunch was enjoyed by all at the hotel restaurant. Afterwards the afternoon clinics began with more Basic review applied to Hyungs. After dinner the evening session reviewed the day’s lessons. Monday was the day for the practice of one-steps. SBN Kenyon taught dynamic clinics all day with technically precise demonstrations. He also gave interesting drills of application and practice. With all of the instruction being closely observed by SBN Hwang. Tuesday morning we were all treated to an inspiring demonstration of Il Soo Sik by SBN Hedges of the United Kingdom. Who ingeniously made a mistake that SBN Hwang turned in to a teachable moment for all. Tuesday morning was Ho Sin Sool and Ja yu daryun. That night we were finally able to go out to visit the town of Sibu. We walked to a local open-air restaurant to enjoy the local cuisine and take in the ambiance of Malaysia. Wednesday followed with learning and reviewing Chil Sung Sam Ro, and Sa Ro, along with Yuk Ro Cho and E dan. SBN’s teaching of Chil Sung Sa Ro was very informative and powerful. This was also history in action because it was the first time that Chil Sung Sa Ro was taught in Malaysia. SBN Kenyon taught Choong Jool to those who had previously been taught Do Moon. I had the honor and privilege of teaching Du Moon to those of appropriate rank. Thursday morning was the formal Ko Dan Ja Shim Sa. That afternoon the U.S. group boarded our plane to Miri to enjoy two days of relaxation. Thursday evening we arrived in Miri and checked in to the Righa Royale Hotel. The hotel was an amazing five star hotel with a relaxing atmosphere and a beautiful enormous swimming pool. Friday we all went to a local cave and enjoyed a sweat filled walk through the rainforest and explored the cave that is inhabited and enjoyed by the local bats. That night’s dinner was enjoyed at a local seafood house with our friends from Maylasia. Saturday we relaxed, swam (including sunburn) and of course we relaxed. Sunday we boarded our plane at 7:00am as the sun was rising. Eighteen hours later we arrived on Sunday gaining our lost day back as we crossed the International Date Line. Monday we were all back teaching classes and sharing our new knowledge and wonderful memories with our students and their families.
